How The Doux uses artificial intelligence to have neighborhood interaction

“I guess we’re moving into a space where most companies look good I am technology companies,” says Maya Smith.

Collaboration with Black Women’s Code

In collaboration with Black Women Code (BGC), The Doux once again presented the Black Good Looks AI Problem in June, inviting budding creators to release their unique AI-generated films.

Prior to partnering with BGC, Smith had already been experimenting with artificial intelligence to bring its advertising campaign and product launches to life.

To help realize the vision for The Doux’s Press Play Collection, unveiled over the past twelve months, he used Midjourney’s AI to organize the endless concepts in his head and generate actionable renderings to guide his production staff. “We didn’t want to spend a lot of time and money on revisions,” Smith says.

Smith is inspired by everything from the evolution of the black Barbie to pin-up customization to the Palm Springs aesthetic. “When people are talking to one of these platforms, even if you’re very good, you’re still going to want to be very specific,” Smith says.

“You’ll have to tell yourself [in this case] paint the story so you know what to say. You will have to know the angles of the virtual digital camera, huge images. You still have to show yourself what you could tell the AI ​​to do.”

The last liberation was once no different. The products in The Doux’s Block Party collection have been formulated to resist humidity. The crucial downside, Smith notes, was telling this story without leaning on the usual, often culturally unfounded hype that showed the arc from kinky to sleek, implying that the hair wasn’t amazing in the first place.

With the help of artificial intelligence, the image of a bubble was once a metaphor for a moisture barrier.

“It seems like manufacturers need to lean on the veterans they serve,” Smith says. “Everything we do is professional through our group. AI is simply a different way to engage them.”

AI will never change IRL

In this spirit, “Block Party” thinking was once customer-driven. New York remains its largest group, and what Smith kept paying attention to about the city stuck with her: that it was once changing, that neighborhoods looked different than what people grew up with.

So Block Party was an homage to the famous New York block events that gathered so many customers of The Doux.

For its New York debut party, The Doux staff invited 60 good-looking journalists, influencers and distributors for dinner and dancing, and hired DJ Ty Alexander to lead the set featuring hit songs like Boosie’s “Wipe Me Down,” Lauryn Hill’s “Doo Wop (That Issue)” and FLY’s “Swag Surfin.”

“I guess our love language for our group is to show them one of the simplest ways we see them and make sure they see themselves,” Smith says.

Key Points: Artificial intelligence is inevitable, but once again in-person experiences maintain irreplaceable group factors.
